TOMMYâS ROLLS WAS ALREADY IN THE DRIVEWAY WHEN I pulled into my regular spot outside the office. He waved to me as I got out of the Mercedes and activated the car alarm. I visually checked out the office from the outside, making sure everything was in order. Crime had been on the decrease lately in Dade County, but it never hurt to remember that anything could happen anywhere. Satisfied that the office seemed safe and secure, I walked toward Tommy.
âHi, Lupe,â Tommy said, stepping out of the Rolls to open the passenger door.
I kissed him lightly on the lips. He smelled as fresh and sweet as ever and looked especially good in his double-breasted gray pinstripe suit with a light pink shirt. I realized that my attraction to him hadnât diminished an iota from the moment I first laid eyes on him. I had unresolved issues regarding Tommy, as they would have said on a daytime talk show. Tomás, for all his charm, receded from my consciousness for the moment. And as for Alvaro, I had to guiltily admit that I hadnât really thought of him all day.
I wasnât going to worry about it. To paraphrase Scarlett OâHara, Iâll think about it tomorrow.
âTop up or down?â Tommy asked. It was the first time I could recall him asking my preference. I knew Tommy loved driving with the top down, especially on the causeway to Miami Beach, so I motioned for him to leave it down. My hair was pulled back into a braid, so it wasnât as though it was going to be irrevocably mussed up in the wind.
The Miami sky shone over us, lit by a quarter moon so bright I felt as though I could reach up and touch it. Tommy took a Montecristo Número Uno from his pocket, lit up, and took a deep drag. I smelled the rich odor of good tobacco mixed with the scent of the night.
